This book is the result of the author's PhD studies at the Helsinki University of Technology. It is a study on how open source has challenged the thinking and actual use of intellectual property in the software industry. The emergence of open source software and the rapid expansion of the Internet have brought new software licensing practices to mass markets.

The overall argument of the book is that open source licensing has indeed changed the ways the software industry thinks of and actually uses intellectual property. Almost all major software companies in the world have since 1998 started to adopt open source licensing models as part of their business.

This book further argues that open source can have relevant implications on intellectual property rights policy. Simply stated, openness balances commercial regulation. Open licensing systems have proved how potential drawbacks from overregulation can be fixed without state intervention.
